VIDP Overview

The Vegetable Industry Development Program (VIDP) is a key initiative for the Australian vegetable industry.

VIDP outcomes address the key strategic issues facing the vegetable industry as international trade performance deteriorates and imports increase.

VIDP creates dollar benefits to the vegetable industry by providing resources that inform business decision making by growers.

VIDP began in July 2009 and focuses on the following key areas:

• Consumers and markets

• People

• Pest management

• Economics

• Research outcomes

Details of the outputs from each of the VIDP subprograms, and how you can use these to improve your business, are provided in the attached 4 page brochure (pdf 363kb).

The VIDP consists of a number of sub-programs that are working together to provide tangible outputs that deliver the above benefits.

The VIDP sub-programs are:

• Knowledge Management
Provides a central access point for research, development and extension (RD&E) information and tools to help grow your business. These resources are located within the AUSVEG website.

• Consumers and Markets
Informs growers about how domestic markets work, and describes consumer and household behaviour when buying and consuming vegetables. Information on supply chains and consumer preferences will assist you to assert more influence on your commercial returns.

• Economics
Ensures that the vegetable industry has accurate and up-to-date economic data and analysis to inform industry RD&E and policy development.

• People Development
Provides programs and resources to help participants within the vegetable industry improve their business, people management and leadership skills.

• Integrated Pest Management
Coordinates and supports the development and adoption of “best practice” for the integrated management of all vegetable crop pests including insects and mites, diseases, nematodes, weeds and vertebrate pests.

• InnoVeg
Gathers RD&E information from a range of sources and translates it into practical knowledge and insights that growers can understand and apply to their business.

• Collaborative Industry Organisations
Consisting of the Vegetable Associations from each state, delivers outputs from the VIDP to their grower networks via electronic and printed material, workshops and grower visits.

• Communications Support
Provided by AUSVEG, communicates VIDP outputs to growers via the Vegetables Australia magazine, Veginsights and the weekly AUSVEG e-newsletter.

These sub-programs are delivered by a range of providers and directed by a National Coordinator.

VIDP service providers are:

  • National Co-ordination - Rural Directions (David Heinjus, Lu Hogan, Barry Philp)

  • Knowledge Management - Freshlogic with AUSVEG (Steve Spencer, Richard Mulcahy)
