We pay tribute to Stanley (Stan) Wallace who passed away on 29 July, 2011 in Keilor, aged 96 years and who until only a few months ago, had worked side-by-side with his son David on their Keilor property.
Stan was a much loved and respected family man, he had a full life filled with family, friends and neighbours, the farm, footy, fun and food.
Stan was born at his parent's home on Arundel Road, Keilor on 22 October 1915 where he lived all his life bar about three months when he did his basic army training at Seymour and Puckapunyal during WW2.
Stan married the love of his life, Kathleen Broomfield in 1949 and they shared their life together for 50 years until Kath passed away in 1999. They had five children Kim, Jeff, Maria, David and Anne.
Being a whiz at English and Maths, Stan won a scholarship to Stott's Business College in the city, where he studied accounting, shorthand and typing.
Stan could have had a successful business career but due to the Depression of the 1930's and other factors he decided to make his living off the land, working for his parents and his Uncle Jim.
It was only about two years ago, at the ripe old age of 93, that Stan finally retired from the family business. But that did not stop those green fingers growing a range of vegetables for home consumption.
Even today there are 88 broccoli plants in two raised beds and a dozen silver beet plants that Stan planted earlier this year. Another area in which Stan proved his mettle was producing a magnificent display of dahlias every year for at least 20 years.
Today his youngest son, David, is running the business that Stan commenced in 1946 and the Wallace name has been continuously supplying the market for over 100 years.
