Herb & Spice Seminar

The Australian Herb and Spice Industry Association - AHSIA, recently held a Future Directions Seminar in Ballarat.

Excellent presentations from businesses active in the Herb and Spice Industry, led to a wide ranging discussion of modern production and marketing methods that have been proven successful.

Speakers included:

Robert Hayes – Freshzest P/L
Jan Vydra – Australian Freshleaf Herbs
Andrew Drummond – Bardon Produce
Michael Brouer – Southern Light Herbs
Ben White – New Rural Industries

Much of the panel discussion was also very relevant to vegetable growers :

  1. Consistent production of quality product had to be secured by owner operated facilities.

  2. Customer requirements were closely assessed and addressed with a combination of production systems, value adding packaging options and logistics arrangements.

  3. Sophisticated computer based systems linking all sectors of the business including suppliers, production sites, packhouses, and delivery systems

Some interesting facts from the seminar:

  • Forty years ago there were only three major herb crops marketed - curly Parsley, Coriander and Dill.

  • Today, over 100 Herb & Spice product lines are widely available, with a farmgate value of $150m growing at 10% p.a., and with many more crops new to Australia, in the pipeline.

The seminar closed with a discussion of new opportunities, challenges and future directions for the Australian Herb and Spice Industry.

Complete details, including full text and slides of the presentations, can be viewed on the AHSIA website.
